Moorea Island, French Polynesia

Welcome to the virtual tour to Moorea, an island in French Polynesia. In the Tahitian language the name means "yellow lizard". Indeed, these reptiles live here, but this tour is a chance to discover a variety of natural marvels of this small island in the South Pacific Ocean. Moorea is in the Society Islands. According to archaeologists, this area was settled from Samoa and Tonga around 200 CE. The first European to sight the island was the Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernandes de Queirós, in 1606. The first European settlers arrived during the 18th century.

For ordinary people ascending limits over 3000 meters without proper acclimatization is very dangerous and after a couple of hours may result in anoxia (oxygen starvation). Many tourists overestimate their and abilities time of exposure and are evacuated on helicopters as a result of such a reckless approach. But in our case the goal was 7000 meters in a helicopter without doors. And all this in order to capture the best line of sight.

The pandemic forced most of us to stay at home, so we all did our walks and little excursions and escapes from the home prison in the immediate vicinity. Some years ago I decided that I was going to make an aerial project of my hometown, and especially of the Danube river. Yet I would have never expected to discover such a Sleeping Beauty. Winter weather, the foggy mornings, the golden sunsets, the freezing sunrises paint vibrant colours on the landscape and dress the Danube in the most exquisite of clothes. I spent five and a half months on this project, and I had to get up early on many occasions — something I am not a huge fan of, as none of us. But seeing this face of the Danube river was very rewarding. I could witness fleeting moments of beauty, while most of the inhabitants of the town were sleeping unaware of nature's spectacle unfolding.

The Temple of Doom, Palau

The entrance is hidden in the wall under water, at a depth of about 25 meters. Only a few people can get here, and it is even more difficult to get out of it: coral piles hide the passage. Only experienced divers can make this dive!

The atoll consists of about 415 motus, islets and sandbars comprising a total land area of about 170 km². There are approximately one hundred narrow passages (passes), called hoa, in the fringing reef. The lagoon has a maximum depth of 35 m and it is so large that it has its own horizon. Aniva Lighthouse. Sakhalin Island, Russia

This navigational structure was built in 1939 on a small rock called Sivuchya near the hardly accessible Cape Aniva. The southern part of Sakhalin was under the reign of Japan back then. Fierce currents, frequent fogs and sunken rocks make this area very challenging for navigating. There were many shipwrecks in these waters before the Karafuto Prefecture authorities decided to build a lighthouse here.

Vodlozero National Park, Republic of Karelia, Russia

Karelia is known as the land of a thousand lakes. But that's a severe understatement: there are at least 60,000 of them in this region. The largest lakes of this area are Lake Ladoga and Lake Onega; along with them, there is a smaller and less famous but equally beautiful Lake Vodlozero. It is located in the southeastern part of the Republic of Karelia and covers 358 km². The lake stretches from the south to the north and has glacial origin: it is the reason for this coastline to have a winding shape. While looking at the shore, we can imagine the movement of glaciers that had changed the landscape.

Split-panoramas

The particular characteristic of the split-level photography (i.e. divided) is the possibility to capture the air and water scenes simultaneously in one image. Technically, creating split-level pictures is a rather difficult task.

Chad. South Sahara. Sands and Oases

Oases form a bright contrast to the desert silence. The most known one is the oasis around the Lakes of Ounianga. The shores are covered by palm groves, the waters are full of fish and local people grow delicious fruits and vegetables irrigated by the water taken from the lake. 18 Ounianga Lakes covering around 20 km² were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its uniqueness. Some of the lakes are fresh, others are saline or hypersaline. These lakes form a hydrological system, replenish their supplies from groundwater sources and feed off each other.

Jellyfish Lake, Palau

A common jellyfish usually causes a burn for a human by producing, in self-defence, a poisonous burning substance from their tentacles. But these jellyfish don't have natural enemies in this lake and over the millennia of calm life they have lost their defensive abilities. So one can safely take a jellyfish in hands and swim with them. That's what many tourists come here for: to swim in a "soup" full of jellylike creatures, it is an unforgettable experience. Shaytan-Tau Nature Reserve, Russia

On October 9, 2014, one of the youngest nature reserves of Russia was founded along the Shaytantau ridge of the Southern Urals in Orenburg Oblast and was named the Shaytan-Tau Nature Reserve. "Shaytan-Tau" is Bashkir for "Devil Mountain". According to legends, this name was given to this place by nomads who got extremely tired of severe weather conditions — cold and strong winds...

Altai, Chulyshman Valley. Russia

Chulyshman River is spanning 240 km and for most of the length it reveals its turbulent "mountain" nature: it is full of rapids, waterfalls and shallows that don't stop the experienced whitewater lovers. One of the sections of the valley is the area Akkurum which is located 15 km away from Lake Teletskoye on the right bank of the river. One can witness unusual stone formations that had appeared as a result of weathering and water erosion. Some of them are as high as 7 meters!

Meknes, Morocco

The history of Morocco counts four capital cities: Fez, Marrakesh, Rabat and Meknes. The latter one functioned as the imperial capital only for a short time, between 1673 and 1727, but it was the period of being Morocco's "Versailles". Nowadays it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and this AirPano virtual tour is focused on this unique place.

The main city of Vietnam, Hanoi, was founded back in the 5th century. The current name was given to the city in 1831 and originated from the Vietnamese words Hà ("river") and Nội ("inside"). This name well reflects the position of the city between the rivers Hồng Hà (the Red River) and Tô Lịch.

Chara Sands, Russia

A contest for choosing seven "wonders", the best landmarks of the Transbaikal area, took place in 2010. A fascinating place named the Chara Sands became one of the winners: it is a sand massif covering 30 km² and lying in the Chara Basin. Over thousands of years ago, a giant glacier came down from the mountains bringing millions of tons of sand, mud and clay. As soon as the ice age was over, the glacier melted to become a lake while in the conjunction of the ridges Kodar and Udokan, the Chara River ran down to the north. Later, the lake dried up and a great amount of sediments resting on its bottom came out on the surface. This massif suffered the actions of wind that formed dunes of peculiar shapes.

Belfast, United Kingdom

The northern part of the island of Ireland politically belongs to the United Kingdom, and Belfast is the capital of this region. It is located at the western edge of Belfast Bay and is protected by the range of hills from the north-west. The name of the city (Irish: Béal Feirste) means "mouth of the Farset" which is a late tributary of the River Lagan. All these conditions are perfect for the needs of the shipbuilding. And this is the very thing a greater part of Belfast's history is strongly related to...

The world's largest extant animal is the whale, while the largest living fish species is the shark that was named in honour of this animal, the whale shark. Its average length is 9 meters, but the examples of an 18-meters length are known. A whale shark's teeth are tiny but it has over 300 rows of them. Chad. From N'Djamena to Ennedi Massif

In the middle of the African continent, there is the country of Chad that was named after a lake. The territory of Chad is generally flat, but there are still certain elevations. In the southeast part of the country, there are highlands called Wadai (Ouaddaï) and rising at up to 1,666 meters; in the northwest, there is the Ennedi Plateau. It is a sandstone bulwark and its highest mountain, Basso, rises at 1,450 meters. Erosion, time and wind have created bizarre formations, such as columns, arches, towers and bridges. Azores, São Miguel Island, Portugal

The archipelago of the Azores is a part of Portugal. Its name is considered to be originated from the ancient word "azures" meaning blue, or azure colour. Endless ocean frames the wonderful landscape of nine islands having volcanic origins. São Miguel is the largest island of the archipelago with the total area of 744.55 km2 and a population of around 140 thousand people.

Zermatt, Matterhorn, Switzerland

Zermatt is one of the most beautiful and interesting ski resorts in Switzerland. The settlement with the population of fewer than 6,000 people is surrounded by the majority of four-thousanders of the Pennine Alps such as Dufourspitze (4,634 m), the highest peak of Switzerland in the Monte Rosa massif, and the Matterhorn (4,478 m). On the slopes of the latter mountain, at the elevation of 1,608 m, there is the settlement of Zermatt.

Kronotskoye Lake. Kamchatka, Russia

The largest freshwater lake in Kamchatka bears the name Kronotskoye. The lake covers an area of 246 sq km, has the maximum depth of 136 meters and was formed around 12,000 years ago as a result of the activity of Kronotsky and Krasheninnikov volcanoes. Lava flows dammed the ancient Paleokronotskaya River and created a natural barrier for the water.

Komodo island, Indonesia

Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world measuring 5,120 x 1,760 km. According to various accounts, it consists of around 13,000 — 17,000 islands with only 9,000 of them having names. This May with the help of Dmitry Chistoprudov we came on the roof of the Capitals' City building complex. We were standing there at a height of 300 meters above Moscow and shooting several spherical panoramas from the highest tower in Europe.
